Understanding Your Results

  • When two or more mileages are shown e.g. '80,000 or 100,000' this indicates different change intervals for different engine codes. It is NOT one mileage or the other. One particular model of car with the same engine size can have various engine codes. These engine codes can require a different timing belt change interval even though the engine size is the same. Check with your manufacturer to find out your engine code and the change interval.
  • The timing belt change intervals that are shown on My Timing Belt are based upon normal driving conditions. If vehicles are driven in adverse driving conditions belt change intervals will reduce requiring you to replace your timing belt before the stated interval shown for your car.
  • On the results page for any particular car we show the manufacturer recommended change intervals for timing belts, auxiliary drive belts and diesel injection pump belts. The majority of cars only have timing belts/cambelts but we collated intervals for other belts if the vehicle has them fitted.
  • Please remember when replacing a timing belt or other belts within an engine, check on the condition of the belt tensioner as this may also need to be replaced. For some vehicles it is advised that you change the water pump when the timing belt is being replaced. Please check with your manufacturer if there are any recommendations on changing the water pump when carrying out a timing belt/ cambelt change.
  • If there is any doubt over the condition of your timing belt or components they should be changed. A change interval is only recommended by the manufacturer and a change of a timing belt before the recommended interval can sometimes improve the running of the car and give you peace of mind.
  • It is imperative that you know your engine code for your car and that it definitely has a timing belt/cambelt. Unfortunately, sometimes cars with the same engine code can have a timing chain instead of a timing belt/cambelt. Generally, timing chains do not require changing at a set interval, only if there is a fault with it. This is fairly rare but please find out that your car definitely has a timing belt before looking for a garage to carry out a scheduled timing belt change.

Can't Find Your Car

If you cannot find your particular model/engine size this indicates that either the manufacturer hasn’t recommended an interval for that particular model or that it has a timing chain and not a timing belt. Check with your manufacturer to clarify your interval or if your vehicle has a timing chain. If your vehicle does have a timing belt/cambelt and there is no recommended change interval in place, a decision to change can be based upon mileage covered and/or the condition of the current belt by a qualified mechanic.
